This spring, join Dr David Souden as he describes the significance of Whitehall Palace, once the greatest palace of its time in Europe. Today, the Banqueting House is the sole survivor of this legendary, lost building. We also take inspiration from The Wild, the Beautiful and the Damned exhibition at Hampton Court, offering a unique opportunity to experience a 21st-century take on courtly love.

Charles II and his Merry Monarchy
    A Social Evening and Workshop
    With Jean Smith

    Date        Monday 16 April
    Time        7pm – 9pm
    Cost        £25 / £22 HRP members

At the Court of Charles II, the elite aristocracy performed to strict rules of etiquette to enhance their popularity and matrimonial or sexual prospects. Courtiers were required to display impeccable manners, eloquent conversation and refined dancing skills, all governed by an easy, graceful felicity that ought to look natural and untutored. These 17th-century conventions seem obscure by today’s standards. But is life really any less complex today?

Join us on this unique evening to discover if our modern day society can learn anything from Charles’s Court in the ways of flirting and social etiquette. Is an alluringly sleepy-eyed gaze as winsome today as it was in the 17th century?

Cultural and social anthropologist Jean Smith is an expert in human attraction, body language and how we flirt with one another. Jean’s work involves studying and commenting on human behaviour, body language, human interaction and relationships.

This is a social evening, including a talk, activities and a drinks reception.

Whitehall Palace and its Place in the History of the Nation - SOLD OUT
    Evening Lecture
With Dr David Souden, HRP Head of Access & Learning

    Date        Monday 28 May
    Time        6.30pm – 8pm
    Cost        £12 / £10 HRP members

Join Dr David Souden as he traces the story of Whitehall Palace, a remarkable building holding a key place in the architectural, political and social history of England.

David will bring to life the many events and characters that make up the story of Whitehall Palace, from its origins in the Middle Ages as the home of the Archbishop of York, to the execution of Charles I, the establishment of the Commonwealth, the Glorious Revolution and the succession to the throne of William III and Mary II. The only standing building remaining from the palace, however, is Inigo Jones’s magnificent Banqueting House, the majority of the complex having been lost in a devastating fire in 1698.

David is author of The Royal Palaces of London, a unique and comprehensive record of London’s
magnificent royal palaces past and present.

This event includes a drinks reception.
