The wilderness garden, Hampton Court Palace

A Hampton Court personality

Princess Sophia Duleep Singh was the daughter of the Sikh Maharaja Duleep Singh. Sophia’s godmother, Queen Victoria, granted her and her sister, Bamba, grace-and-favour accommodation at Hampton Court Palace in 1898.

The sisters became active suffragettes, campaigning for votes for Women. Sophia accompanied Emmeline Pankhurst on the suffragettes’ first march, or deputation, to parliament in 1910.

Did you know?

Princess Sophia refused to pay her taxes, arguing: ‘When the women of England are enfranchised I shall pay my taxes willingly.

If I am not a person for the purposes of representation, why should I be a fit person for taxation?’
