Art and stories
Hampton Court has the largest collection of State beds in the country. Each of these magnificent beds has its own fascinating story, from George II's 'travelling' bed (the best camp bed you'll ever see!) to Queen Charlotte's stunning bed covered with 4,000 embroidered flowers.
Off-site sessions at two nursing homes - Hampton Care and Galsworthy House - saw residents share their stories about unusual beds that they have slept in, and hear the tales of Hampton Court's great beds.
The artist Sofie Layton developed art activities connected with the stories and craftsmanship of the State Beds, and which would work with residents of a variety of physical abilities. In the first week participants made cushions with a screen-printed image of flowers like those on Queen Charlotte's bed; in week two, the groups tried gilding, as featured on several of the State Beds; in the third week the participants made silk flowers, inspired by the flower imagery featured on the beds and in the bedrooms at the palace; in the final week, the individuals made embossed copper decorations, inspired by the story of Mary of Modena's bed and the 'warming pan incident'.
The sessions received very positive feedback from both residents and staff.
