Creating beautiful reliefs

Two community groups and two nursing homes worked on a project inspired by architectural symbols featured at Hampton Court Palace, from the Tudor rose to the fleur-de-lis. Groups visited the palace and saw how craftsmen had worked symbols into the palace architecture. Working with the artist Kay Aplin, the groups then created beautiful ceramic reliefs in the form of symbols they had seen in the palace. Once fired, they then painted them before the artist added lustre and fired them for a final time.

The reliefs will be displayed on large planters near the Tiltyard Tearoom in the palace gardens, meaning that thousands of people will see the beautiful work of the 60 individuals who took part in the project.
