The beach today

Each summer visitors can scour the beach for treasure and archaeology

Tower Beach closed in 1971 for a variety of reasons ranging from costs to environmental factors. Now it opens for two days each summer so that the public can search for treasure which has washed up on the shore, during our annual Archaeology Weekend.

National Archaeology Weekend

Archaeology Weekend has taken place on Tower Beach and the Tower wharf since 1998. The event is highly popular with local residents, archaeology enthusiasts and tourists alike.

This free event hosts workshops and displays on the wharf, while archaeology experts and environmental workers help the public make sense of the coins, fossils and relics they find on the beach.

In 2008, Archaeology Weekend took place on 26 and 27 July. Hundreds of people took to the sands on one of the hottest weekends of the year, uncovering treasures and getting a taste of the fun that would have been had on the beach in its heyday.
