Hampton Court Palace has a remarkable 241 decorative chimney stacks, the largest number of in the country. In this workshop you will get up-close and personal with the design and craft of the famous Wolsey’s chimneys. Prepare to get dusty as you begin to gain practical experience in the art of rubbing, squaring and cutting brick – the highest expression of the bricklayer’s craft.

Join our in-house historical food experts for a hands-on lesson in Georgian cookery. A period known for its rich diet and elaborate dining etiquette, you will make a feast fit for a king: a seafood loaf followed by chocolate tart. Working from original 18th-century recipes, during this one day workshop you will be able to taste as you cook or take completed dishes home.

18th-century crewel work (Summer School*)
Workshop with Lynn Hulse and Nicola Jarvis of Ornamental Embroidery

A traditional English embroidery technique, crewel work was a popular method of embellishing domestic furnishings in the early 18th-century, incorporating delicate, naturalistic designs. Ornamental Embroidery will introduce the history and technique of crewel work, as you learn to embroider a botanical motif inspired by a Georgian bed hanging. Includes materials; suitable for all levels.

Conserving the state bed (Summer School*)
Study afternoon with HRP conservators

Find out how the exhibition’s wonderful collection of royal state beds was conserved for display. As we celebrate the centenary of the Textile Conservation Studios, our conservators will guide you through their practice and tell you more about the objects themselves, such as Queen Charlotte’s exquisitely embroidered bed hangings and a very rare 17th-century bedrail.

The art of wood work (Summer School*)

There are fine examples of woodwork throughout Hampton Court Palace, not least the striking ceiling of the Chapel Royal, the finely sculptured furniture, and the Grinling Gibbons decorative motifs in the King’s Apartments. Taking inspiration from the beautifully carved royal bedposts in the exhibition, you will come to understand and practice the traditional technique of woodwork.

Creative Quilting (Summer School*)

This two-day workshop will introduce a range of exciting creative quilting techniques. After researching designs in the exhibition, experiment with trapunto quilting, shadow quilting, corded quilting and more. By the end of the session you will have produced a series of samples to develop into bigger works, or have completed a cushion, bag or other small project. Includes materials; suitable for all levels.

Royal School of Needlework (Summer School*)
Talk and tour with RSN staff

Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court. Dedicated to the art of hand embroidery, the RSN has worked on state robes for George V and Elizabeth II, as well as the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress. See a demonstration of stitching techniques and view their private collection of Georgian textiles and garments up-close.

Fragrances of the Georgian court (Summer School*) - SOLD OUT
Workshop with Tanya Moulding

Discover the early 18th century through a different sense: smell. Sample aromas that evoke the era, from the ‘foul gases’ in the air thought to cause disease, to the sweet herbs and spices strewn by the ‘herb strewer’ in order to mask them. Then, create the modern-day equivalent – your own bespoke perfume made with essential oils such as rose, vanilla and violet.
