Henry VIII’s court sat down to dinner here, daily, in two shifts, beneath the magnificent timber roof decorated with badges showing the initials of Henry and his beloved Anne Boleyn.
A pageant of magnificent events followed in later centuries: Shakespeare performed here in front of King James I, George I had the Great Hall made into an 18th-century theatre and Tony Blair entertained the leaders of Europe at a great conference here in the autumn of 2005.
