A little history of the space…
Princess Victoria was probably born in this room, her father, the Duke of Kent’s dressing room, which had been fitted up temporarily as a double bed room.
At 4.15 am on 24 May 1819 the Duchess of Kent, after a labour of six and a quarter hours, was safely delivered of a healthy child, ‘a pretty little Princess, as plump as a partridge’.
The proud father described the room in a letter to his mother-in-law, the Dowager Duchess of Coburg. He enclosed a drawing and view from the room, now lost, and wrote: ‘She gave birth in the bed to the left and right now she is in the bed on the right while I am writing to you.’
