A little history of the space…

The White Tower is the oldest medieval building at the Tower of London. It was built to impress, but was also equipped as a fortress and a residence, providing accommodation for the sovereign as well as for some of his more unfortunate 'guests'.

It was from this first floor of the White Tower that Ranulf Flambard, Bishop of Durham and the Tower’s first prisoner, affected a daring escape using a rope secreted in a vat of wine.

The King of France and his son were also lodged here in 1358 during the Hundred Years’ War.
