Within the Wardrobe

'Within the Wardrobe' was an exhibition exploring memory and personal history through dress, inspired by the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection and created by the communities of Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster. The exhibition ran from 22 April 2007 to 31 March 2008.

About the exhibition

'Within the Wardrobe' was the result of an outreach project which aimed to draw together and reflect some of the stories from the communities of Kensington & Chelsea and Westminster.

An array of beautiful miniature wardrobes filled with embroidery, sculpture, textiles and photographs revealing fragments of people's histories were presented.

Inspired by the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection held at Kensington Palace, members of local groups shared their memories and mementoes to create the contents of the wardrobes, offering an insight into their lives.

Outreach programmes

Within the Wardrobe was part of the outreach programme run across all of the historic royal palaces.

Our projects involve working in partnership with artists, schools, local communities and other organisations to widen access to the palaces and their stories.
