Costume and textiles sessions

New Status symbols

Using the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection and our historic costume handling collection as inspiration we will look at examples of how royal fashion has influenced high street fashion through the centuries. Royal symbols, fabrics and styles have always been adapted and imitated by the fashion community. Court and royal insignia can be seen to have gone from court to catwalk to Topshop, with gold epaulettes adorning the shoulders of many high street jackets. There have been some royal trendsetters associated with Kensington Palace too, from Princess Charlotte to Princess Margaret and Diana Princess of Wales. This session will look at those trends and give students the opportunity to use the handling collection to come up with their own contemporary designs.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11.00 and 13.00
Friday 11.00 only
1.5 hours

New Fabric of time

From bodices to bone, fans to feathers and shoes to silks we have an extensive range of exemplar historic costume for students to use and take inspiration from. The session will be led by a member of our education team who will give an introduction to the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection and the importance that fashion has played at Kensington Palace from 17th to the 20th century. Students will then have the opportunity to handle and examine the items themselves, take notes, sketches and investigate the stories these items hold.
