Life

During her latter years, Princess Margaret preferred to distance herself from the prying eyes of the public. Her health had begun to deteriorate, and in 1993 Princess Margaret caught pneumonia preventing her from continuing with many of her official engagements. However, she endeavoured to keep up with her existing charity work.

In 2001, the Duke of Edinburgh’s 80th birthday at Windsor Castle and the 100th birthday of Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester counted amongst her final public appearances.

While in Mustique, in 1998, the Princess had suffered the first in a series of strokes. Following her worrying health scares, she strove to obtain a healthier lifestyle.

On 9 February 2002, the announcement of Princess Margaret’s death was declared from Buckingham Palace. The Princess had passed away during the night, aged 71.

(Topshop)In the spring of 2006, the famed high street label Topshop, launched a collection inspired by the dress of Her Royal Highness, aptly named ‘Princess’. It paid homage to the style encapsulated by a beautiful princess, ensuring her iconic legacy is kept alive in the contemporary fashion world.

The collection recalled Picture Post’s comment in June 1953 which stated, ’She is so tiny, so perfectly dressed, so much a fairy Princess.’

With Princess Margaret’s style still prominent in many of today’s design creations, her elegant, refined and timeless dress sense can undoubtedly be said to represent that of a classic style icon.
