Norman Hartnell

Sir Norman Hartnell was appointed official dressmaker to the Royal Family in 1938, designing outfits for formal engagements, as well as lavish gowns for great royal occasions.

Hartnell was responsible for numerous significant dresses worn by Princess Margaret.  In 1951, he produced a beautiful lace cocktail dress, which Dorothy Wilding photographed her wearing in 1953. This dress was in-fitted dove-grey lace and filmy silk-tulle, displaying the hallmarks of Hartnell’s elegant, feminine style. It echoed the delicate ‘white’ wardrobe created by Hartnell for HRH Elizabeth the Queen Mother to wear to Paris in 1938. Interestingly, Christian Dior later cited these garments as a source of inspiration for his post-war creations.

(Private Collection © Historic Royal Palaces) Hartnell also created Princess Margaret’s wedding dress, worn for her marriage to Antony Armstrong-Jones on 6 May 1960. The dress was fashioned from white silk organza, and was in keeping with her renowned taste, with the design, by royal wedding standards, kept elegantly understated.

The dress had a jacket style bodice with long sleeves and flattering V-cut neckline, lengthening into a train at the back. It was intricately constructed, cinched in at the waist with a full skirt consisting of 40 yards of fabric draped over a mass of stiffened tulle petticoats.

The dress was complimented with a matching long sheer veil of silk organza, with an ivory trim, which helped create a border to the whole look. The absence of embellishment served to further increase the prominence of the beautiful Poltimore Tiara that the Princess wore on her wedding day.

Princess Margaret’s grey lace dress, wedding dress and replica Poltimore tiara are on loan to the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection, Kensington Palace. The dresses are not on display at present.
