Into the light

An artistic community project inspired by the palace and its interiors

A number of community groups transformed The Queen’s Gardens at Kew Palace with a magical night-time light and sound installation.

About the project...

Lighting up the Queen's Gardens
Kew Palace served as the inspiration for a number of community groups to create beautiful lanterns in artistic workshops over the course of several months. The lanterns were displayed and lit in the gardens around Kew Palace in an event that celebrated the creative work of the participants.

The event also included a soundscape, commissioned by Historic Royal Palaces and Drake Music, that drew inspiration from the music of Handel, one of the favourite composers of King George III.

As the audience followed the light and sound path, the BYT Experimental Theatre Group performed along the route of the lantern procession.

The participants
Community groups and participants on 'Into the light' included:

  • Lindon Bennett Primary
  • Grove Care Partnership
  • Barnardo’s Spectrum group
  • Hampton Court Palace Access Forum
  • Strathmore Secondary School
  • Feltham Arts
  • Asian Women’s Centre, Hounslow

This project was run in partnership with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and Drake Music.

This project was part of our ongoing work with Kew Gardens to broaden and deepen community participation and provide opportunities to discover and delight in the natural and man-made heritage at Kew. The 'Into the light' project took place at Kew Palace in spring 2008.
