Conservation in focus

Bringing our palaces to life!

Imprisonment, escapes, executions, Crown Jewels, the Tudors, princesses...

The palaces are known for its dramatic and spectacular history. This history has been kept alive through the preservation of the site and its buildings.

Tim Archbold sketch

Historic Royal Palaces has a huge task to care for the palaces and give them a future as long and valuable as their past. To learn more about how we do this we have developed a learning programme; Conservation in Focus; bringing our palaces to life!

As leader in education within the Heritage sector, Conservation in Focus broadens learning beyond history and into conservation, science, design & technology, art and archaeology through formal and informal learning. It gives students an opportunity to get a look behind the scenes.

Conservation in Focus offers learning opportunities that support the national curriculum, inspire and interest young people in career prospects in conservation through learning activities, offering opportunities for students to meet a range of professionals within the industry and provides apprenticeships alongside HRP conservation projects.

We would happily design a bespoke session or a creative workshop adapted to your scheme of work. To get involved contact our building conservation education officer for further details on:

You may be our next conservator! In the meantime:

We keep the skill alive!

The art of Stonemasonry

The Tower of London is credited to the skills of masons; old and new. The remarkable preservation of its form makes it the most complete 11th century palace in Europe.

The art of Blacksmithing

The office of a smith at the Tower of London can be traced as far back as 1275 under the reign of the warrior King Edward I.

An opportunity was given to the general public to explore the basic techniques of blacksmithing.

The art of Brickwork

With 241 chimneys, Hampton Court Palace has the largest number of decorative chimney stacks in the country.

An opportunity was given to the general public to explore the basic techniques of brickwork by making a chimney stack.
