Ghost tours

Press release

This winter, experience Hampton Court Palace as you’ve never before by testing your nerve on a spine-tingling ghost tour! From 31 October, the spookiest night of the year, we invite you to walk in the historic footsteps of kings, queens and thousands of courtiers to discover eerie tales of hundreds of years of hauntings. Hampton Court’s paranormal residents might even join you as you wander through their beautiful palace by night!

Home to King Henry VIII, Hampton Court Palace has witnessed many dramatic royal events over the years, including the death of the king’s third and favourite wife, Jane Seymour whose ghost is said to wander through Clock Court. Henry’s fifth wife Catherine Howard was accused of adultery at the palace and sentenced to death at the Tower of London. Her ghost reportedly still lingers in the corridors of the Haunted Gallery where centuries ago she pleaded for her husband’s forgiveness. More recently, CCTV cameras captured footage of a skeleton-like figure in period costume at the palace, a mysterious occurrence still unexplained today. The tour also takes in parts of the place not usually open to the public including Apartment 33, where Jane Seymour gave birth to Henry’s only son Edward before dying two weeks later.

Ghost tours at Hampton Court Palace start on Halloween night (31 October 2007). Each tour will last for 90 minutes and include light refreshments served half way through the tour.  Tickets cost £25.00 per person.  Tours will run every Friday and Sunday until March 2008 and will start at 19:30 on Fridays and 18:00 on Sundays. Tickets are limited, so advance bookings are necessary.  Click here to book tickets online or call 0844 482 7795.  The minimum age for attendance is 12 years. We regret that, due to the nature of this tour route, we are not able to accommodate wheelchair users. In addition, the tour involves climbing stairs and visiting areas to which there is no lift access.

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace.  We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.

We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, so we depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors.

These palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

We believe in four principles.
Guardianship:
giving these palaces a future as long and valuable as their past.
Discovery: encouraging people to make links with their own lives and today’s world.
Showmanship: doing everything with panache.
Independence: having our own point of view and finding new ways to do our work.
