Sir Adrian’s appointment fills the last vacancy on the 11-strong Board of Trustees of this conservation charity, all of whom are non-executive.

Historic Royal Palaces Board of Trustees consists of the Chairman, Charles Mackay, and ten other Trustees: Bridget Cherry OBE FSA; John Hamer; Malcolm Reading; Sir Alan Reid KCVO; Sir Hugh Roberts KCVO FSA; General Sir Roger Wheeler GCB CBE – Constable, Tower of London; Dawn Austwick OBE; Sue Farr; and Sir Trevor McDonald OBE.

The chairman is appointed by The Queen on the advice of the Secretary of State. Four other Trustees are appointed by The Queen and six by the Secretary of State. The appointments are part-time, unpaid and last for three years. The Trustees normally serve two terms and, in exceptional circumstances, may be appointed for a final term of three years. Trustees are carefully selected for their skills and experience to support Historic Royal Palaces’ work.

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace.  We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built. We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, so we depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors. These palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

We believe in four principles.

Guardianship: giving these palaces a future as long and valuable as their past.
Discovery: encouraging people to make links with their own lives and today’s world.
Showmanship: doing everything with panache.
Independence: having our own point of view and finding new ways to do our work.
