Historic Royal Palaces welcomes latest ALVA visitor figures

Latest visitor figures give encouraging picture for UK tourism
Volunteers at Hampton Court Palace

Statement

Independent charity Historic Royal Palaces today welcomed figures released by the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions which show record visitor numbers for UK attractions in 2011.

The Tower of London, which is managed by Historic Royal Palaces, saw visitor numbers increase by almost 6% from 2010, to just over 2.55million.

Chief executive Michael Day said: “These latest figures give an encouraging picture for the UK’s tourism sector despite the turbulent economic times, and those attractions which invested in refurbishment or new exhibitions fared particularly well. It is clear that in 2012 we can’t afford to be standing still; we must be bold and strive for new heights of excellence to capitalise on the unique opportunities that the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and London Olympics will bring.”

In late March Kensington Palace will be re-opened after a £12m transformation, while at the Tower of London the newly refurbished Jewel House will give the Crown Jewels a dramatic new showcase in time for the Jubilee.

About Historic Royal Palaces

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace.  We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.

We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, so we depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors.
These palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

We believe in four principles.  Guardianship: giving these palaces a future as long and valuable as their past. Discovery: encouraging people to make links with their own lives and today’s world.  Showmanship: doing everything with panache. Independence: having our own point of view and finding new ways to do our work.
