A Jacobean Christmas

The King James version of the bible was written to be heard rather than read, and what better place to hear the Christmas verses than in the very hall in which James I commissioned it?

This is a Christmas celebration to launch the 400th anniversary year of the publication of the King James Version in 1611: it weaves rich and beautiful Christmas readings and choral settings of biblical verses with carols and scenes depicting the Jacobean context in which this bible came to be. The performance is presented in the magnificent Great Hall and culminates in the great kitchen at Hampton, with mulled wine and minced pies and a finale of carols.

27 December 2010 - 2 January 2011

Tudor Christmas

Join in the festive activities as live costumed interpreters transport you back in time to a Tudor Christmas.  Dress up in Tudor cloaks and join Henry VIII's new young wife, Catherine Howard, as she celebrates her first Christmas as Queen at Hampton Court Palace. With songs, stories, music and the king's fool, it'll be a Christmas to remember. Meanwhile in the Tudor Kitchens, our historic cooks will also be preparing suitable festive fare. Come to the King's finest palace and experience the splendors of his court.

Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace.  We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.

We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, so we depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors.

These palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

We believe in four principles.  Guardianship: giving these palaces a future as long and valuable as their past. Discovery: encouraging people to make links with their own lives and today’s world.  Showmanship: doing everything with panache. Independence: having our own point of view and finding new ways to do our work.
