The Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport has approved the reappointment of Sophie Andreae as a Trustee of Historic Royal Palaces for a second term of three years (three year terms are a requirement of Historic Royal Palaces’ Royal Charter). The term of this appointment will run from 1 January 2012 until 31st December 2014.

Sophie Andreae has been a Trustee of Historic Royal Palaces since January 2009. Ms Andreae has a background in historic buildings, architecture and conservation. She is a Council Member of the National Trust, a Council member of the Georgian Group and a Trustee of the Greenwich Foundation. She was a Member of St Paul’s Cathedral Fabric Advisory Committee for many years. Before this, Ms Andreae served as Head of London Division of English Heritage, before being appointed Commissioner of the Royal Fine Art Commission and of its successor body, the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE), where she served two terms until 2004. She is a member of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation and has recently been elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. Earlier this year she was created a Dame of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great in recognition of her work for the Patrimony Committee of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales.

Established by Royal Charter in 1998, Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace and Kew Palace. We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built. We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, so we depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors. These palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

With a total turnover of over £62m, all self-generated, and permanent staffing of over 700 people, Historic Royal Palaces’ aim is to help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built. Recent activities have included the conservation and visual enhancement of the Tower of London’s White and Brick Towers as well as conservation of brickwork in the Great Hall Court at Hampton Court Palace, which was the venue for many events to celebrate the Henry VIII’s recent Quincentenary. In March 2012 Kensington Palace will re-open following a major £12 million project that will transform the visitor experience, with many improvements to help visitors enjoy and understand this historic Royal home. The same month will also see a major re-presentation of the Crown Jewels at the Tower of London, and the Royal Kitchens at Kew will open in Summer 2012. Through events at the Tower and Hampton Court respectively, Historic Royal Palaces is also poised to play a significant role in Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations and the London 2012 Games.

The Chairman and Trustees give their services on an honorary basis. Expenses incurred by them, in the performance of their duties, are reimbursed.
