Press release

Saturday 18 June 2011
10:00 – 17:00
Kensington Palace
London W8 4PX

Show off your majestic mutt, pedigree princess or your king of canines at the Dashing Dog Show – a special event in aid of ‘Welcome to Kensington – a palace for everyone’ - a £12 million major project by independent charity Historic Royal Palaces that will transform the visitor experience of the iconic royal residence.

The Dashing Dog Show is a special event for all members of the family, with a starring role for those with four legs! Does your dog have the waggiest tail in W8, or a special trick that will tickle the judges?  Come and join in the celebrations with your prize pooch at the original ‘dog and throne’ show!

Dogs can be entered in up to seven fun competitive classes and there will also be doggie games, obedience training, sensational fly ball, plant sales and live entertainment.  Entry is £10 per dog, but people go free! All proceeds will go towards the fundraising appeal for Kensington Palace’s major £12 million renovation project. Places are strictly limited, so advance booking and registration for classes is strongly recommended.

Kensington Palace was Queen Victoria’s childhood home.  As a girl, Victoria was devoted to her Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Dash.  She would dress up ‘dear Dashy’ and parade him through the grounds.  For one day only, canine companions can walk in Dash’s paw prints and play a part in the exciting future of Kensington Palace, which is being transformed through a £12 million project by conservation and education charity Historic Royal Palaces.

This event is held in association with Dogs Today magazine and supported by Dogs Trust.

10:30 Prettiest Princess
Do you think your bitch is the belle of the ball? We’re looking for the loveliest lady dog at the show. Whether she’s a majestic mutt or a pedigree princess, come and compete for the title of the Prettiest Princess.

11:15 Prince Charming
Is your dog hot to trot? Come and show off his pulling power for the judges. Neutered or not, all dogs are welcome.

12:00 Dog Queen Victoria would most like to take home with her
What is it that Queen Victoria is looking for? Is it a gleaming coat, a waggy tail or a mischievous glint in the eye? If you think that your dog has the potential to amuse her majesty, then this is the class for you.

14:00 Loveable rogue
Does your pet have a wicked sense of humour and a twinkle in their eye you just can’t resist? Or can they wrap you round their paw? Let them charm the judges in this most adorable of classes.

14:45 Best dressed Victorian on six legs
Top hats and parasols, English lace and farthingales, monocles and walking canes… what is it that makes you and your pooch the best dressed Victorian?

15:30 Royal Variety Pawformance
Does your canine companion have a special talent fit for a royal audience? Can they stand on two legs or play dead? Can they wave or roll over on command? Can they sing or even dance? If your dog has a special skill we want to see it.

Dash lookalike
Does your dog look just like Queen Victoria’s childhood Cavalier King Charles, Dash? Why not enter the Dash lookalike competition and win the chance to have your pet open the original dog and throne show with Queen Victoria herself! The judging for this class will take place in advance.  To enter please complete and return the registration form enclosed with your ticket(s), together with a photograph of your pooch, by 6th June.

Kensington Palace is part of Historic Royal Palaces, the independent charity that additionally looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House and Kew Palace. We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built.

We receive no funding from the Government or the Crown, so we depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, volunteers and sponsors. These palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.

We believe in four principles. Guardianship: giving these palaces a future as long and valuable as their past. Discovery: encouraging people to make links with their own lives and today’s world. Showmanship: doing everything with panache. Independence: having our own point of view and finding new ways to do our work. www.hrp.org.uk Registered charity number 1068852

Further information
The Dashing Dog Show is open to all fit and friendly dogs accompanied at all times by responsible owners aged over 16.  In common with many other public gardens, dogs (except assistance dogs) cannot normally be admitted to Kensington Palace and its grounds in order to ensure the enjoyment of this special place for all our visitors.  For this reason, dogs will not be admitted to the new gardens when they are completed in 2012. This is a one-off event and no dog will be admitted without a ticket.  We reserve the right not to allow admittance to any dog to the show and grounds.
