Kew Palace reaches the top four on short-list for the prestigious Gulbenkian Prize for museums and galleries 2007

Press release

4 April 2007
Historic Royal Palaces are appealing to supporters and visitors to go online and pledge their support for Kew Palace to win the Gulbenkian Prize at www.24hourmuseum.org.uk where they can post their comments and messages of support.

Kew Palace, the countryside retreat of King George III and his family, which reopened its doors last spring following a 10-year, £6.6 million conservation and restoration project by conservation charity Historic Royal Palaces, is celebrating reaching the final four on the short-list for the prestigious Gulbenkian Prize, the largest single arts prize in the UK which recognises and rewards the best new museum or gallery.

Kew Palace is one of just four museums and galleries from around the UK to feature in the short-list, and the only one in London. Michael Day, Chief Executive of Historic Royal Palaces, said: “We were thrilled that Kew Palace has been short-listed for the Gulbenkian Prize, alongside three other museums and galleries of extremely high calibre. Kew Palace has just reopened for its second season and we hope that many of our supporters and other visitors will come along and be inspired by its fascinating stories.”

Kew Palace reopened for its 2007 season on Saturday 24 March. New acquisitions on display at the palace include a jigsaw cabinet belonging to the children of King George III and a unique Kew tea canister, made especially for the Royal family.

Last year’s opening was a huge success with the represented palace receiving great acclaim from the world’s media and our visitors. Over 70,000 people were welcomed through the palace doors after the Prince of Wales officially opened it in May 2006.

The winner of the Gulbenkian Prize will be announced in May during Museums and Galleries Month 2007.
