Video tour

Watch a tour through the Medieval Palace and south and east Wall Walks at the Tower of London online.
CrazyProduction

The Tower of London is not an easy site to get around for those with mobility difficulties. For those who can’t manage stairs, some areas are impossible.

One way of making them more accessible is to film them as virtual tours so that people can experience the spaces without having to struggle up and down the steps.

So we approached a student film group, Crazie Productions, and commissioned them to film the spaces. On a cold February morning in 2011 we began in St Thomas’s Tower at the beginning of the Medieval Palace; several weeks later we finished in the Constable Tower at the end of the east Wall Walk having filmed all the rooms and walkways in between.

The edited films then had subtitles added. Voice overs and background music were the finishing touches. Watch them here

The Tower Community, particularly the Yeoman Warders, were very supportive of this project – allowing us access before the Tower opened in the mornings.

The Tower Access Panel have also supported this project and their thoughts and comments have been taken into consideration. Three of its members, Maureen, Sarah and Susannah, provided the voice overs.

The films have been designed to work as individual units or as a whole. Virtual visitors can dip into a room at a time, or experience the whole route by going from film to film. Each film lasts 2-3 minutes and the whole route will take about 25 minutes to experience. You can even watch one film again and again without creating a queue behind you!
