The Tower and the local area

The Tower of London has stood on the same site at the gateway to East London for well over 900 years. It has been a source of pride and fear, employment and entertainment for the people who live near it for all that time; indeed, testament to these enduring links is the name of the fortress’ local borough: Tower Hamlets. Over the following pages, some of the stories of the Tower’s links with the local area are told, from a king riding out of the Tower to face rebels at Mile End to children beating stones with willow wands, allotments and recycling for the war effort to a sandy beach filled with deck chairs. Discover the story of the fortress on your doorstep.
