Crawford Butler

Yeoman Warder

Crawford Butler has been a Yeoman Warder for 17 years.

A Yeoman Warder

A Tower personality

The best part of the job
, he says, is getting to meet people from all over the world.

But keeping up a cheerful appearance for all the visitors is also one of the hardest parts … being ‘on post’ all day long sometimes means having to answer the same questions over and over again!

But Crawford is philosophical:

‘It’s not worth getting in a bad mood as then the day just drags on - and you can have a great laugh with people if you go about it the right way.’

Before becoming a Yeoman Warder, Crawford was in the Army.

He joined at 15 and served for 25 years. He and his family live at the Tower which, he says, is ‘like living in a small village’.

Did you know?

The Tower's team of 35 Yeoman Warders have had a full military career and must have received the long service good conduct medal before taking up the post.

The Yeoman Warders are most visible leading tours and being ‘on post’ at the Tower, but they also have security duties, act as night watchmen, give talks at home and abroad and travel overseas to shows and military parades.
