The Chapel appeal

St Peter ad Vincula has, arguably, one of the richest and most imporant histories of all the Chapels Royal, although this is not immediately apparent at present.  We consider it to be a priority and our responsibility to give the fabric of the building and its interiors the care and upkeep they deserve.

Restoring the Chapel

Inside the ChapelWe aim to replace all of the furniture in the Chapel Royal with new items of appropriate quality. New heating and lighting will be installed in the Chapel and the crypt to enable greater use and enhance the impact and interpretation of the interior. Work will be undertaken to the floor of the crypt whilst protecting the historic stone.

St Peter ad Vincula has a remarkable history. It has witnessed moments in our nation's story that have shaped the world we live in today. New, but subtle and elegant, interventions will be made, designed to bring the Chapel's stories to life for its worshippers and visitors.

We aim to raise 1.5 million to restore the Chapel Royal to the glory and prominence it merits and to convey the majesty, history and divine glory intrinsic to its story.

Supporting the Choir of the Chapels Royal, HM Tower of London

The Choral Foundation exists to support the Chapel’s choir.

Chapel organ pipesIn the 1960s, measures were put in place to bring the Chapel back in to liturgical use.  Following the centuries-old tradition of fine-music making associated with the ‘Chapel Royal’, a Choral Foundation was created to ‘provide a choirmaster and organist, a choir and choral facilities for the edification of those attending public services of worship’.

The present complement comprises the Master of Music, the Deputy Master of Music and ten regular singers with a number of deputy singers.  More information can be found in Chapel Biographies.

Since the Choral Foundation was formed in 1966, a reputation for music-making of a high calibre has been firmly established in the Chapels.

We aim to raise £500,000 to ensure continuance and enhancement of the musical tradition at the Chapel.

"The performance of music within the liturgy has always played a crucial role in the services that take place in the Chapels of the Tower.  Music has enriched and adorned Christian worship for centuries, and the Choral Foundation of the Tower of London provides vital resources to enable music-making of the highest standard to be maintained and developed, continuing the tradition and legacy of Chapel Royal musicians such as Thomas Tallis, William Byrd and Henry Purcell"

Colm Carey, Master of Music, HM Tower of London
