Success Stories

Jacob Street-Anderson

Historic Royal Palace Volunteers Outside

Jacob came to an interview for an apprentice electrician job at Kensington Palace in 2008. He was a young man of 18 enrolled at the College of North West London. Jacob sucessfully won the apprenticeship, which was funded by the Grosvenor Trust, and he began working with electrical contractors ‘Darke & Taylor’ on a two year re-presentation of Kensington Palace, which offered him on-site training and experience.

Jacob is now a fully qualified electrician and looks back on his time fondly: 'Those 2 years on the Kensington Palace site were a great all-round experience for me, I learned a lot, especially about working in historic buildings. I had a good time with highs and lows.' He added, 'But I’ll never forget pulling heavy armoured electrical cables in the pouring rain and knee deep in mud on the East Front!'

Rachel Smallwood

When I graduated from university, like many new graduates, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do with my degree. I had previously worked in retail and managed to get a job in a department store but didn’t feel it was for me and I wanted to try something new.  I took a risk and left full time work to start a 6 month paid internship with the Retail Business Development department at Historic Royal Palaces. I quickly found that it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

The practical skills and experience I gained from the internship really inspired me and opened my eyes to a whole new career in e-commerce that I had never considered before. When my internship came to an end I applied for an E-commerce assistant role with Historic Royal Palaces and am thrilled to say was successful. I feel that my internship was instrumental to my success and has allowed me to find a career that I am excited about in a valuable organisation.

Internships/apprenticeships for the financial year are confirmed annually in April.
