Cushions of the courtiers

Community groups created five unique cushions inspired by figures at the Georgian court.
Cushion

A doctor, a politician, a mistress, a servant and a spy...

As visitors enter the King's Gallery at Kensington, they will find five window seats with bautifully embroidered and printed cushions. Each cushion represents a different person from the Georgian court - Dr. Arbuthnot, the royal physician; Sir Robert Walpole, the first Prime Minister; Henrietta Howard, George II's mistress; Mehmet von Konigstreu, George I's Turkish servant; and John Byrom, a man of mystery who was possibly a spy...

Several community groups worked with the community embroidery organisation Stitches in Time to create these cushions. During the workshops, they learnt about the different people that each cushion represents and chose different aspects of the cushions to embroider and print.
