Within the Wardrobe

Open the door and what do you find?

'Within the Wardrobe' was a community exhibition exploring dress and identity, inspired by the Royal Ceremonial Dress Collection at Kensington Palace.

Costumes and cultures

Inspired by embroidered corsets and tiny 18th-century shoes of the Royal Dress Collection, six community groups from the boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea worked with professional artists to explore the cross-cultural shared meanings of costume and dress.

Participants shared their memories, funny stories, family moments and personal momentoes to create multimedia art pieces tucked into miniature wardrobes.

The personal stories contained 'Within the Wardrobe' offered an insight into the lives of the participants, the Kensington community and led to an exhibition in the North Drawing Room that ran from April 2007 to March 2008.
