John Barnes

Conservation and Learning Director

Historic Royal Palaces

John Barnes joined Historic Royal Palaces in October 2001 in the position of Conservation Director responsible for the care, conservation, and presentation to the public of the five palaces and their collections: the Tower of London (including the Crown Jewels), Hampton Court Palace, Kensington Palace, the Banqueting House in Whitehall, and Kew Palace. In 2006 his title was changed to Conservation & Learning Director, reflecting the diverse work of his department.

John, an architect by profession, began his career in 1982 at the Historic Buildings Division of the Greater London Council, before spending the next 10 years in private practice with a succession of leading conservation companies on some of the most significant projects of their kind.

He joined English Heritage in 1994 as Head of Architecture and Survey.  In 1995 was promoted to be English Heritage Director of Professional Services and was responsible for advice on property conservation and development, grants and statutory casework, contract procurement as well as health and fire safety, security and disability matters.  From 1998, as English Heritage Director of Major Projects, he was responsible for the national projects programme for their 400 sites.  The projects ranged from the creation of four new museums for nationally significant collections and the redisplay of others, to the plans to create a suitable setting and museum for Stonehenge.

John is learning life drawing and karate, but is not prepared to show the results of either.
