Gardener

Barbara Smith

Hampton Court Palace

My day…
includes working in all areas of these wonderful gardens and the nursery that nurtures all of the season’s bedding plants. I prefer weeding and edging, but our ancient maze needs constant attention, the rose garden needs pruning and the fruit trees need to be trained up walls.

I receive constant training and can also attend college to study for horticultural certificates.

You need to be:  Fit and strong, and able to work outdoors in all weathers.

Highlights:  I love riding the sit-on mower! My favourite jobs are weeding and edging. I have just designed a bedding scheme and can’t wait to see it turned into reality and to see the visitors’ faces enjoying my creation.

Lowlights:  Waiting for plants to bloom, borders to fill out.  There are no instant gardens here!

Essential equipment:  A good eye for colour and form and a sharp pair of secateurs.

Following in the footsteps of… Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown appointed as Head Gardener at Hampton Court Palace in 1764. (salary £2,000 a year.) This famous landscape gardener was responsible for introducing a more naturalistic aspect to the gardens at the palace.

Claim to fame: Planting up Todd Longstaff-Gowan’s newly designed garden.
