My job
Garry Wykes, Jewel House Warder, Tower of London
My day: I’m one of a team of 18 men and women who are responsible for looking after the Crown Jewels, which have been kept at the Tower since the 13th century. We also give guided tours and ensure the glass cases are sparkling every morning. From 9.00 to 5.30pm we are on duty, and the team is on call every day except during the Christmas holidays.
You need to: be friendly, to like meeting people from all over the world and not be afraid of darkened vaults!
Previously I have been employed as an Instrument Technician, a Borough Councilor, and a Security Officer
Highlights: a fabulous uniform – Victorian style red trimmed frock coat and gold braided top hat, which is the livery of the Royal Household.
Lowlights: Being asked 300 times a day ‘Are the Crown Jewels real’?
Following in the footsteps of: Talbot Edwards, Keeper of the Crown Jewels when Colonel Blood attempted to steal the Crown, Orb and Sceptre from the Martin Tower in 1671.
