Roles and responsibilities

Gardeners

Our qualified team of gardeners, based at Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace, are responsible for the upkeep of our stunning formal gardens and grounds to ensure they look their best throughout the year, guaranteeing an unforgettable visit for our thousands of visitors.

Duties include weeding, pruning, planting, digging and mowing, using a full range of modern equipment.  Another exciting aspect of the work is the opportunity to be involved in the design of planting schemes for the different seasons.

Warders

Our teams of warders are based at the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace. Their main task is to welcome our many visitors and help them make the most of their day exploring the palace. Warders have an important role as (factually accurate!) storytellers, adding to the visitor experience by bringing history to life and filling in more fascinating details.

Duties also include leading guided tours of the State Apartments at Hampton Court and Kensington palaces and of the White Tower in the Tower of London. They also look after the security, fabric and content of the building, and control visitor access.

The Yeoman Warders at the Tower of London, who are all ex-regular military personnel with at least 22 years service, take guided tours of the palace several times every day. Their duties also include looking after the security of the Tower and its surrounding area.

Ticket office staff

First impressions are lasting impressions!  We consider welcoming our visitors a very important role at all our palaces.

The roles within our ticket office include selling entrance tickets, guidebooks and assisting visitors with any queries they might have.

Retail assistants

We have several themed shops at each of our palaces selling a large variety of merchandise to visitors from all over the world.

It is the job of the retail team to make each palace an unforgettable experience for every single customer.  As well as serving and advising customers, the role includes keeping the shop running smoothly and make sure that the shelf displays are always attractive and well stocked.

Events executive

Commercial events and functions are a vital part of our business at all of our palaces. We offer our clients an exciting and different venue with a wide and unusual range of options for them to choose from.

The role of events executive includes following up enquiries from clients and converting these into firm bookings. This involves dealing with initial enquiries, arranging and leading client visits on site, co-ordinating all administration for the event and ensuring that the client has an unbeatable experience leading to repeat business.

Conservators

Our team of highly skilled textile conservators are constantly striving to save our priceless artefacts for future generations.  These can include priceless tapestries of 500 years old to Royal evening and wedding dresses.

This role involves carrying out hands on conservation care to professional conservation standards.  There is also an opportunity to participate in research projects and take part in our visitor-facing ‘Ask the Conservator’ programme, explaining our work to staff, visitors and professionals alike.

Outreach/community involvement

Our specialist outreach teams are responsible for building relationships with local authorities and specialist providers to increase ownership of and participation in our palaces. In particular, our ideas are aimed at hard-to-reach groups, people from socially excluded backgrounds and the youth market. Therefore a background in promoting and delivering outreach events is essential as is the experience in community involvement and engagement with local people.

There are various opportunities within our finance team including accounts receivables and payables, site sales, systems, travel trade and treasury functions.  All these roles play an essential part in managing the income, budgets and revenue of our charity.

Electricians

Our Maintenance team is responsible for ensuring reactive and routine maintenance tasks are carried out. Our Electricians respond to electrical and lighting faults, undertake electrical testing and inspections and carry out minor installations of electrical services.  Additional activities include the provision of an electrical/lighting support service in the setting up and successful operation of our vital functions and events.
