Preventive Conservator

Suzanna Neill

Hampton Court Palace

My day…Daily I carry out the hands-on routines of collections care on the Queens route. (Each Preventive Conservator works on a route Queens, Kings, Tudor, Georgian and every 3 months we will change routes) At times we will all be involved in a  specific project or objective, recently we carried out a high level clean in the Queens apartments, previously to this the team were involved with cleaning and condition checking the books at Hampton Court.

You need to be:  The qualities to do the job involve a willingness to muck in whatever the task, being a team player and being prepared to form working relationships with other departments. Working in public areas also requires us to act as educators and storytellers as shown through the Ask a Conservator programme, leading tours through the apartments.

Previously I was…. An auctioneer at Philips Auction House at Bayswater before transferring to Bond Street , to work with John Sandon (Antiques Roadshow fame) in the Ceramics department

Highlights:  My role leads to a variety of work, it is never the same. I enjoy working hands on around the palace and meeting and working with different characters.

Lowlights:  The lowlights are the cold of the Tudor kitchens in the winter and the heat of the Queens in the summer. The varying temperatures in the palace lead us all to suffer from colds and flu from time to time.

Essential equipment:  An understanding of conservation, methods of work and how and why we undertake our work. Dedication and patience.
