Senior Warden

Orville Virgin

The Tower of London

My day…  My principle duty is to collect the White Tower keys and open the building for cleaning in the morning. I then carry out supervision of the White Tower daily team of 13 men and women to prepare the building for the visiting public. Once the floors are manned, and the public admitted, it is my duty to ensure the day runs smoothly and that the public have a safe and enjoyable day.

You need to be:  Friendly and helpful to the visitors, and have knowledge of the building and artefacts to answer questions and give guided tours.

Previously I was…  a police officer in Jamaica, before joining the Royal Armouries staff and being subsequently transferred to Historic Royal Palaces.

Highlights:  Wearing a very nice uniform which makes a good impression on the visitors, and allows me to proudly display the wealth of history that abounds in this wonderful building.

Lowlights:  Being cold in the winter and warm in the summer, but that’s part of working in historic buildings.

Essential equipment:  The determination to achieve the best possible outcome, and a sense of humour.

Following in the footsteps of…  William the Conqueror, who having ordered the building never had the chance to walk upon the hallowed floors.
