For me Princess Amelia’s bedroom is the best room in Kew Palace because you can read the history on the walls. Princess Amelia was one of the youngest of George III’s children and died of tuberculosis at a young age. Amelia was quite a tragic figure so to find little parts of her in this room is quite touching, I think. This room is filled with little clues about how it looked when Princess Amelia lived there. So we thought we’d leave it as it is - we’d let visitors discover these clues again for themselves.
Princess Amelia got the worst room if you think about it. Her sister Elizabeth was downstairs. She got the fancy room next to her father’s and that was decorated in the latest fashion – very modern, probably avant-garde and artistic for the time. Amelia’s sister Augusta, who was close to her in age, got the room next door, which is bigger with better views. And she got this tiny little room. But it is richest in the surviving material that tells us about her.
