A celebrity wedding

Ian Franklin, a State Apartment Warder at Hampton Court Palace, recounts a tale of the palace's grace and favour community.
Ian Franklin, State Apartment Warder, Hampton Court Palace

Mrs Rosalind Kennedy had a grace and favour apartment at Hampton Court Palace. Her late husband, Edward Coverley Kennedy, had served and died during the First World War. A very grateful government rewarded Mrs Kennedy with a grace and favour residence at Hampton Court Palace. Mrs Kennedy I know, was a rather eccentric lady. Her son, the broadcaster and journalist Ludovic Kennedy, was a very important man in his own right. In February 1950, in the Chapel Royal, he married Moira Shearer, the famous ballerina and star of the British classic ballet film The Red Shoes.

And they spent their honeymoon here at Hampton Court and we still have the old newsreel footage of their car sweeping  in to clock court, the bride and the groom getting out, going in to what we now call the King’s Private Dining Room where for many many years members of the palace community had their wedding feasts.
