Introducing Abraham

This magnificent tapestry is part of a set of ten depicting the biblical story of Abraham.  They were commissioned by Henry VIII in the early 16th century and woven in Brussels between 1541 and 1543 using silk, wool and gold and silver metal threads.
Abraham
The story that it tells is that of Abraham’s meeting with Melchizedeck, the king and high priest of Salem, following his victory over the Elamites.  Melchizadek can be seen on the right of the tapestry wearing a crown and offering Abraham an urn of wine. Behind Abraham are his men eating and drinking the bread and wine offered by Melchizedeck. If you look at the background of the tapestry you can see the battle with the Elamites taking place.
