Can you find Umbriel? Hampton Court’s gnome has been summoned from underground by the Magic Garden’s spell and he now appears throughout the palace grounds.

Mysterious Umbriel is rarely seen (like all gnomes he is shy) but he has many stories to tell of the gardens’ lost secrets. See him now, before he disappears back into the earth once more.

Go on a gnome hunt

Pick up a daily programme leaflet from the ticket office and look for the map of the gardens. This will show you the areas of the garden that Umbriel appears in, but you’ll have to look hard to find him!

Explore the gardens and spot all the gnomes. Umbriel will look different in each garden area as he’s decorated to reflect his surroundings. Press the button on his arm and he will tell you more.

The making of Umbriel

The gnomes have been brought to life as part of a community engagement project. Over 150 local people worked with artists and writers to create both Umbriel’s designs and the stories he tells.

Look out for guest stories written by poet Michael Rosen, novelist Francesca Simon and our own Lucy Worsley. The gnomes are voiced by Stephen Mangan.
