Drama and theatre studies

This interactive and lively drama session will explore the theatrical court masque as a ‘mirror of man’s life’ (Ben Jonson 1631).

A mixture of dance, spectacle and drama, the masques were political instruments that explained how a world of chaos was brought into harmony and peace by the good governance if the King. Students will work with a drama specialist to consider the social, cultural and historical factors that influenced masques under the Stuarts.

They will be encouraged to draw comparisons between 17th century and contemporary Britain, interpreting and devising their own modern-day court masque!

Subject to availability, students will have the opportunity to perform their modern masques in the Great Hall at Hampton Court Palace.
