Queen Charlotte’s state bed

Conservation project profile

Project focus: Queen Charlotte’s state bed, Hampton Court Palace

We’re conserving the intricately embroidered domed roof of this magnificent state bed.

Queen Charlotte's bed

Why this project?

Queen Charlotte was the devoted wife of George III.

Her state bed, which she had made to her specific requirements, dates from 1772-8 and is a sumptuous union of richly adorned textures, with fine gilt wood carving and intricate silk embroidery.

It was last on display in 1992 and is being conserved in preparation for a State Beds exhibition at Hampton Court Palace in the near future.

However, visitors to the palace in 2008 will be able to view the reassembled and fully conserved bed in all its glory on special behind-the-scenes tours from June to September.

Read more about the conservation of this gorgeous bed and book your tour here.

Timings:  July-October 2008
