It was here, in front of the altar, that Henry VIII’s mother Elizabeth of York lay in state for twelve days after her death in 1503. Elizabeth died shortly after giving birth to a girl, Katherine. Her husband, Henry VII was grief-stricken and held a candle-lit vigil for her.
