Princess Amelia's bed arch

Princess Amelia's bedroom, Kew Palace
Just over the window is the skeleton of Amelia’s bed arch. Because she was a princess, Amelia’s bed had a bed arch above it. When the room was adapted for the princess’s use, the bed arch was installed in the most convenient place so you can see how the posts just stand right in front of the window and obscure it (the Georgians didn’t worry about aesthetics and symmetry like we do)! If you look up on the corners of the bed arch, you can see tiny fragments of green pigment - remnants of the green wallpaper that would have covered this room. Next to it, if you look even more closely, you can see little holes, nails and a pattern of tiny little pieces of fabric that are sticking out underneath the nails and show how the wallpaper was attached.
