Princess Amelia's bedroom, Kew Palace
The floor is interesting because underneath the floor boards is the huge structure that holds the palace together. The house was first built in 1631 for Samuel and Catherine Fortrey. Like many Jacobean houses, everything is over-engineered. The timbers are huge. They are about one and a half feet square and tremendously strong. So there are lots of little gaps under the floors where we were able to wire in light, security systems, fire protection systems, sound, heating, music…all the things you have in a modern building There is a virtual tapestry of cable underneath the floor boards. It is woven throughout the building but you’ll never see it because it’s all hidden away.
