Princess Amelia's bedroom, Kew Palace

If you look to the right of the fireplace you’ll see a wall that appears to be made of fragments of timber and skirting boards. It looks like it’s made of things from a skip. And it probably was. These boards were off-cuts from other parts of the building that the Georgians used to line the walls to make a smooth surface for the wallpaper. It’s a good example of recycling. Labour was cheap then but materials were expensive so you didn’t waste any timber or panelling.
