Princess Amelia's bedroom, Kew Palace

This room would have been decked out beautifully in the latest fashion Princess Amelia had a gothic stone fireplace specially brought in. It’s painted pink. Some say the pink colour was just a mixture of every paint they had lying around but others say it was a favourite colour of the Princess Amelia and her sisters. This is a genuine medieval fireplace. If you look very closely at the top left and right corners you can see two shields. The shields would have been painted with some heraldic insignia that might help us to identify where it came from some day. The princess probably wanted to have this medieval fireplace. If you think of early 19th century adventure stories about medieval damsels in distress living in nightmarish, gothic houses perhaps she fancied herself to be one. She and her sisters led such sheltered lives here at Kew. Their mother had already lost the King to illness and was determined not to lose anyone else.
