Between the bed arch and the door to Princess Augusta’s bedroom beyond there’s a little alcove which probably contained a privy. There were a lot of privies, or toilets, in the palace for the time. They weren’t plumbed. They were just nice, grand buckets, which had to be emptied by staff. You can imagine it – Princess Amelia lying under her beautiful bed arch – luxurious, but the toilet was just there behind her bed! In the early days before we re-opened the palace in 2006, you could detect a slightly odd smell (perhaps of urine) in that area. I always think you can still smell it on a warm day, when the sun has been shining through the window on that very spot.
