Byward Tower, Tower of London

Here, St. Michael is depicted as the Prince of the Israelites, which is how he is described in the Book of Daniel in the Old Testament. If you look closely you can see he’s actually wearing a little gold crown (it’s real gold too) and princely robes. His wings are stunning – they’re very finely painted with vermillion (red), red lead (bright orange) and white.  St. Michael holds a balance with two pans – one is sadly gone but the other is painted with two devils! The idea was that St. Michael weighed the souls of the dead to decide whether they would go to heaven or hell. Up close, you can see one devil hanging from the baskets, trying to swing the balance in favour of sending the souls to Hell!
