I find the altar area particularly interesting because of the 1381 Peasants revolt. Simon Sudbury, Archbishop of Canterbury was the man who came up with the poll tax. The tax outraged so many peasants that a man named Wat Tyler led a protest march. By the time the mob got to London, things were getting out of hand. When they reached the tower they found the Archbishop on his knees at an altar - praying for his life, I should imagine. They dragged him to Tower Hill, and hacked his head off – we say hack because there sometimes it took up to 8 blows of the axe! They placed his head on a spike and displayed it on London Bridge for everyone to see.
