Drawn at the Tower with Art Macabre
Unlock the secrets of the Tower of London through a series of adult-only drawing events. Royals, rogues, ravens and rituals will all be illuminated by Drawn at the Tower, as visitors explore the Tower’s dark past through special themed drawing nights. Capture the iconic architecture of one of London’s most famous landmarks, while models pose as historical characters from its 900 years of history.
Adults of all abilities are invited to arm themselves with pen and pencil to explore the Tower. Each event features a special guest or guest artists including Jason Atomic and Lozzy Bones to keep your mark making fresh.
Drawn at the Tower is a new creative collaboration between Historic Royal Palaces and immersive drawing company Art Macabre. Launching its 2016 events at the Tower is an alternative Valentine’s Day themed event ‘Tower of Love: Romance is Dead’, on 15 February. Upcoming themes include the ravens, witchcraft and the royal menagerie.
Art Macabre’s Director, Nikki Shaill, says:
“Drawing and mark-making is a powerful tool to explore subjects and stories; connecting the head, hand and heart. We’re excited to be able to access such a historic site after hours and look forward to bringing the diverse stories of the Tower’s past to life through costumed models, music, narrative and special guest artists. All these elements can help London’s culturally inquisitive immerse in the atmosphere of the Tower and inspire them to explore through drawing.”
Zinta Jaunitis, Learning Producer at Historic Royal Palaces says “Drawn at the Tower is a unique opportunity for those who think they can’t draw, want to draw and love to draw. Be prepared to be put under a 900 year old spell as you experience the Tower of London at night.”
Open to people of all artistic confidence and sketching experience, Drawn at the Tower is open to anyone over 18 who are interested in trying something new in 2016.

Art Macabre is a creative company led by Nikki Shaill, founded in 2010. Their immersive drawing events inject a lethal dose of theatricality and curiosity into drawing. They are held in unique spaces, bringing together elements of narrative, performance, music and theatre. Previous venues include Somerset House, Barts Pathology Museum, V&A, Latitude Festival, cemeteries and old operating theatres.
Historic Royal Palaces is the independent charity that looks after the Tower of London, Hampton Court Palace, the Banqueting House, Kensington Palace, Kew Palace and Hillsborough Castle. We help everyone explore the story of how monarchs and people have shaped society, in some of the greatest palaces ever built. We raise all our own funds and depend on the support of our visitors, members, donors, sponsors and volunteers. With the exception of Hillsborough Castle, these palaces are owned by The Queen on behalf of the nation, and we manage them for the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Historic Royal Palaces cares for Hillsborough Castle under a separate contract with the Northern Ireland Office.
